Meet your developer

Hi, I'm Trent Nelson.

I'm the founder of Keyturn Software, based in Spanish Fork, Utah. I help small to medium businesses stop overpaying for software. I build the CRMs, websites, and business apps they run on, move their data over, and put everything in their name.

When you work with me, you deal with me directly: the person who scopes your project is the person who builds it and answers the phone when you have a question.

Sound familiar?

Your software should work for you. Not the other way around.

The bill keeps climbing

Every renewal costs more, and the one feature you need just moved to a pricier plan.

Paying for seats nobody uses

Full price for people who log in twice a month to look up a phone number.

Five tools that don't talk

The same customer typed into the CRM, the scheduler, the invoice, and the spreadsheet.

Spreadsheets on the side

Your team works around the software because it was never built for how you work.

There's a better way: software built for your business, that you own outright.

That's where the name comes from. Most software is sold "turnkey," but you only ever rent the key. Keyturn Software builds your software, then turns the keys over to you: the code, the data, and the accounts.

Why now

Custom software used to be out of reach. AI changed the math.

For twenty years, a subscription was almost always cheaper than building your own. AI development tools have cut the time it takes to build business software from months to weeks, so a CRM, portal, or internal app built just for you can now cost less than a few years of the subscription it replaces.

Per-seat pricing makes the gap bigger every time you hire. Software you own costs about the same for 5 users or 50.

What owning your software means

Your code

Source code in a repository under your company account, documented so any developer can work on it.

Your data

Customer records and history in a database you control, exportable any time.

Your accounts

Domain, hosting, and email in your name. I work inside your accounts, not mine.

Your price

No per-seat fees and no surprise renewal increases. You pay for hosting and the changes you choose.

Yours to run and improve

I set it up so you can run it, change it, and keep improving it yourself

Owning your software only matters if you are not stuck waiting on a developer. So every project ends with your team running the software on its own, and with you knowing how to use AI to keep making it better as your business changes.

Set up around your team

Built for how you work, with your data moved in and everyone who uses it trained before launch.

Change it yourself

Add a field, a report, or a new step in your process without opening a ticket. You get plain-English documentation of how it all works.

Improve it with AI

I teach you to update your software with AI: describe the change in plain English, review it, and publish it. Every version is saved, so any change can be undone.

Help when you want it

For bigger changes or a second opinion, call me or use the optional care plan. Never required.

How it works

  1. Free consultation30 minutes. I learn how your business runs and what you pay for software today.
  2. SaaS auditEvery subscription ranked: keep, cut, or replace, with build cost, running cost, and payback.
  3. BuildShort cycles with your team trying real work in the new software every week.
  4. Hand over & trainYour data moved, your team trained, and you learn to change and improve it yourself with AI. Then you cancel the subscription.

Subscriptions I commonly replace

  • CRMs: Salesforce, HubSpot, Pipedrive, Zoho CRM
  • Website builders: Wix, Squarespace, and paid plugin stacks
  • Client intake and portals: form builders and onboarding tools
  • Scheduling and dispatch tools priced per user or per booking
  • Project and job tracking tools your team works around
  • Quoting, proposals, and reporting add-ons
  • Payments and invoicing: invoicing tools, payment add-ons, and per-transaction markups

Usually better to keep paying for

  • Payroll and tax filing
  • Your accounting ledger (QuickBooks, Xero)
  • Email and office suites
  • Systems with heavy compliance rules you would have to re-certify

I'll tell you which side each of your tools falls on. Read the full build-vs-buy guide.

Payments are on the build side. I build invoicing, online checkout, recurring billing, and card-on-site payments straight into your software, connected directly to a processor like Stripe or Square. You stop paying a software company's markup on every transaction.

Common questions

Can a small or medium business really replace its SaaS with software it owns?

Often, yes, for CRMs, websites, intake forms, scheduling, quoting, job tracking, internal dashboards, and reporting. AI development tools have made custom software far cheaper to build, and companies with 20 to 70 staff have reported cutting software costs by 40 to 80 percent this way. It is a worse fit for payroll and accounting ledgers, and I will tell you when keeping a subscription is the smarter call.

What does "you own it" actually mean?

The source code lives in a code repository under your company account, the domain is registered in your name, the hosting and database run in accounts you control, and your data can be exported at any time. If you stop working with me, everything keeps running and any developer can take it over.

What does it cost to run software we own?

Usually hosting, a database, and any AI usage. For a small or medium business that is often tens of dollars a month rather than hundreds or thousands in subscriptions. You get the expected running cost in writing before you approve a build.

Who maintains the software after it is built?

You can, and that is the point. I set the software up so your team can run it day to day, and I teach you how to use AI to make changes and improvements yourself. Every build also includes a support period after launch. After that, an optional monthly care plan, help per change, or any other developer are all available, because you own the code.

Can we make changes to the software ourselves?

Yes. Part of every project is teaching you how to update and improve your software with AI: you describe the change in plain English, review what the AI produces, and publish it. Every version is saved, so any change can be undone. For bigger changes, I am a phone call away.

Do you work with businesses outside Utah?

Yes. I meet Utah County businesses in person in and around Spanish Fork, and work with businesses anywhere else by video call.
